Tromsø husky sledding tours compared

Most husky tours from Tromsø take about four hours, but the time you actually spend on the sled ranges from 20 minutes to well over an hour. That number, plus the age limit, is what separates them. Here's how the main tours compare.

Which tour should you book?

If you want to really drive: Arctic Adventure Tours

About 70–80 minutes on the sled is roughly double most half-day tours, for a similar price. The kennel is on Kvaløya, half an hour from the city, and you get warm suits, boots, cake and hot drinks. It's not suitable for children under 7, and you need basic fitness.

If you want lunch and a classic kennel: Tromsø Villmarkssenter

A long-running kennel 25 minutes from the centre, with a warm lunch (reindeer stew, with a vegetarian option) included. The self-drive version is for ages 16 and up. The guided version, where a musher drives and you ride, is the best choice for families with young children.

If you're on a budget: Arctic Resorts at Breivikeidet

From about $230, these are the cheapest proper sledding trips we found. The trade-off is less time on the sled: 30–40 minutes on the transfer tour, 20–30 minutes on the shorter "husky experience". They take children from age 4, which makes them a good family option too.

If you want everything in one night: Camp Tamok

Dog sledding, a two-course dinner, a short northern lights talk, then a snowmobile trip to look for the aurora, with photos sent afterwards. It's a long 10-hour evening and only for ages 16+, but it combines three of Tromsø's big experiences.

What to expect

Combine it with whales and the northern lights

Husky tours run in the daytime, so you can join an aurora tour the same evening. With three or four days in Tromsø, a good plan is whales one day, huskies the next, and a northern lights chase on your first clear night. See our northern lights tour comparison and whale watching tour comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive the dog sled myself?

Yes, on most tours. You share a sled with one other person and swap between driving and riding halfway. If you'd rather sit back, Tromsø Villmarkssenter's guided tour has a professional musher drive while you ride.

Which tour gives the most time on the sled?

Of the tours we compared, Arctic Adventure Tours' self-drive adventure on Kvaløya gives the most: about 70–80 minutes on the sled, in a 4-hour trip.

Can children go dog sledding?

Yes, but check the limits. Tromsø Villmarkssenter's guided ride suits all ages, and Arctic Resorts' tours at Breivikeidet take children from age 4 (with an adult). Arctic Adventure Tours isn't suitable for children under 7, and Tromsø Villmarkssenter's self-drive and the Camp Tamok night tour require age 16+.

When is the dog sledding season?

Roughly November to April, depending on snow. Camp Aspemo, for example, runs from 1 November to 7 April. Early in the season, thin snow can mean shorter trails or riding as a passenger instead of driving.

Is dog sledding hard?

Driving is easy to learn, but you need basic fitness: you stand on the runners, brake, and sometimes push uphill. Most tours aren't suitable for pregnant women or people with back or heart problems, and several have a weight limit of about 118–120 kg.

What should I wear?

Tours lend thermal suits and boots, but wear wool layers underneath, warm socks, and bring sunglasses or goggles: the dogs kick up snow.
